UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF HH SHEIKH SAUD BIN SAQR AL QASIMI, UAE SUPREME COUNCIL MEMBER AND RULER OF RAS AL KHAIMAH

RAK Energy Summit 2026 · Pre-Summit Geological Field Excursion

Explore the Geology Behind Ras Al Khaimah’s Energy Story

Join an exclusive field excursion led by RAKGAS geologists and explore the rock formations, tectonic structures and natural systems that have shaped the region’s energy resources over hundreds of millions of years.

Pre-Summit Field Excursion

Experience Ras Al Khaimah’s geology beyond the conference

These field-based learning experiences take participants into the natural landscape to observe real geological features and gain first-hand insight into reservoir systems, structural geology, mountain-building processes, natural hydrogen generation and carbon sequestration systems.

Designed for energy professionals, geoscientists, students and those with an interest in earth sciences and natural history, the excursion combines technical interpretation with direct observation of some of the UAE’s most significant geological exposures.

Option 1

Northern Ras Al Khaimah

Reservoirs, Thrust Belts and Mountain Building

Explore the tectonic evolution of the Northern UAE and the geological processes that created many of the Middle East’s significant hydrocarbon-bearing formations.

Participants will visit key outcrops exposing reservoir, seal and source-rock relationships, major regional thrust structures, propagation folds and carbonate sequences that underpin regional petroleum systems.

Geological Highlights

  • Thrust-front exposures viewed from the historical Dhayah Fort
  • Thamama, Shuaiba and Wasia Group limestone reservoir intervals
  • Nahr Umr seal contacts with the underlying Shuaiba
  • Fold-and-thrust belt structures north of RAK City
  • Angular unconformities in Late Cretaceous and Tertiary foreland basin sequences
  • Permian, Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous carbonate successions
  • Structural transects across Jebel Jais and Wadi Bih
Suitable for: Energy and petroleum professionals, geologists, geoscientists, earth-science students and participants interested in regional tectonics, reservoir systems and natural history.

Activity level: Light to Moderate, including off-road travel and field stops.
Option 2

Southern Ras Al Khaimah & Dibba Zone

Ophiolites, Natural Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Systems

This focused excursion explores the internationally significant Semail Ophiolite and the geological processes associated with serpentinisation, natural hydrogen occurrence and naturally occurring carbon sequestration systems.

Participants will examine obducted mantle and lower-crustal rocks, major shear systems, hyperalkaline spring environments and the complex tectonic history of the Dibba Zone.

Geological Highlights

  • Introduction to the Semail Ophiolite sequence
  • Harzburgite, dunite and layered gabbro exposures
  • Serpentinisation processes and natural hydrogen generation
  • Hyperalkaline blue pools and natural carbon capture mechanisms
  • Metamorphic windows and thrust-fault systems
  • The mixed lithologies and tectonic history of the Dibba Fault Zone
  • Hawasina basinal and Sumeini slope deposits
  • Complex allochthonous terrane relationships
Suitable for: Geoscientists, researchers, energy-transition professionals, participants interested in natural hydrogen, carbon sequestration, natural history and mountain scenery.

Activity level: Moderate, including off-road travel and field stops.
